What is Dementia Carers Together?

Behind every person with dementia is someone caring for them.

Caring for someone living with dementia can bring challenges, questions and changes that can sometimes feel overwhelming. Every day, thousands of dementia carers juggle exhaustion, isolation and overwhelming responsibilities - and too many don't know where to turn for help.

Through our Dementia Carers Together Appeal, in partnership with the Daily Mail, we're raising funds to create a nationwide service with local support networks that ensures no carer faces dementia alone.

Donate to the appeal now

This appeal is about more than fundraising. It's about creating a national movement that puts dementia carers at the heart of the conversation and ensures they get the support they deserve.

The funds raised will help establish Dementia Carers Together, a new nationwide network of support groups created by carers, for carers.

Donate now to ensure more carers can access the knowledge, confidence and community they need, and to create a lasting legacy for dementia carers across the UK.

About the sessions

Sessions are free to attend and are delivered by experienced Alzheimer's Society staff and volunteers in a friendly, supportive environment.

Discover the topics covered in Dementia Carers Together sessions below. Each session focuses on a key aspect of caring for someone with dementia, helping carers build knowledge, confidence and connections with others who understand.

Understanding dementia, the diagnosis journey and the support you’re entitled to

Explores what a dementia diagnosis means, what should happen during and after diagnosis, and the information, treatment and ongoing support that should be available. It also covers carers’ rights, where to go for help, and the emotional impact of adjusting to a diagnosis and caring role.

Understanding what support is available and how to access it

Helps carers navigate health and social care, understand the different types of support available and recognise when additional help may be needed. It covers needs and carers’ assessments, maintaining independence, talking about care when someone may be reluctant to accept help, paying for social care, and considering what the carer is willing and able to do.

Understanding financial support and entitlements

Looks at benefits and financial support that may be available to the person with dementia and their carer, including Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Pension Credit and Universal Credit. It also covers Council Tax support, home adaptations, energy and household support, managing financial affairs and where to get a personalised benefits check or specialist advice.

Practical advice for everyday life

Focuses on the everyday situations carers may find difficult, confusing or overwhelming. It explores communication and changes in behaviour, possible unmet needs, changes in perception, maintaining independence and safety at home, washing and dressing, eating and drinking, and driving. Carers also have opportunities to share practical approaches and discuss looking after their own wellbeing.

Helping make sure their voice is heard

Helps carers feel more confident supporting someone with dementia to express their wishes, needs and preferences. It covers preparing for and navigating healthcare appointments, supporting decision-making, communicating concerns to professionals, understanding rights in health and social care, challenging decisions or raising concerns, and knowing when independent advocacy may be helpful.

Preparing for what comes next

Supports carers and families to think about the future in a practical and manageable way. It covers mental capacity and decision-making, Lasting Powers of Attorney, advance statements and advance care planning, preparing for future decisions, and what being an attorney means in practice. It also explores the emotional side of planning ahead and how the wishes of the person with dementia can continue to be respected.
